"Rise Of Flight" video...

Post by (A/229) BBall on Wed 4 Mar 2015 - 16:09

Hey guys,

I've been logging some quality time in "Rise Of Flight" lately (TRYING to crack that nut known as the "Mission Editor"...with the prize being the ability to make COOP missions in "IL-2: Battle of Stalingrad" [it's the same M.E., and they just released the editor AND the dedicated server info last week for BOS]).

I've always loved flying the WWI era machines, and the combat can be pretty challenging. I cobbled together a short vid from a mission I flew recently.

Hope you enjoy it... (as always, I suggest you turn up the HD AND the music volume...lol)

I haven't flown ROF in I don't know how long, I never managed to get it tweaked to working 'just right' and I kind of gave up on it. The downside of fremium games I guess... You give up on them too easily.

Looks good though Smile

I fly RoF every Tuesday night with a group of Aussie flight simmers and one American from the west coast (got admire his commitment as wakes at 3am to fly with us). Word is that the ME is quite involved. The most recent update threw a spanner in works by wiping out all our saved settings and breaking the Sopwith Camel. Still its quite a fun sim to fly.

Wow Andrei....that IS commitment! (flight simmers....right? Daft bunch of morons....lol)

I've had ROF since it's painful birth several years ago. It came into this world kicking and screaming, and like you Highway, I was frustrated as hell trying to get it to "feel right". They had ALL SORTS of niggling things that would drive you batty (not to mention their "ground breaking" policy of "It's free, but you have to BUY the flying machines!" Wow...look at the industry now....the boys from the "Jane's" and "Microprose" days would have laughed you out of the building if you proposed something like that back in '97!).

Eventually, with all the updates and tweaks, it's become quite the simulation. I've always felt (and have "preached" to the LAN group for years), that if you can fly a bastard little crate (like the Dr.1) well and correctly, then you really do understand aerodynamics, and it'll make you a better pilot all around. Of course, I've also preached to them the evils of wine and women, and that too has fallen on deaf ears...lol.

IMHO, the downside to ROF has always been the "sterile" and predictable SP world, and the lack of COOP in the MP realm (oh, and the M.E. makes drunk, one-handed, chain-saw juggling look easy!). But, with the inclusion of great things like:
- flying the bombers, 2-seaters, etc. (the arty spotting missions are way fun)
- some great user made campaigns,
- and especially Paul Wilson's Campaign Generator (a MUST HAVE...makes the SP world feel almost "dyanamci"),
it has really changed things. Oh, and now some smart guy has a utility that allows any SP mission to be converted into an MP format (to include Paul Wilson's stuff)...so the COOP nut seems to have been cracked.

IMHO, it was born a bastard, got better over the years, and now has flowered into a superb flight simulation.

Thanks for checking out the vid guys....oh....and Strut....Black Sabbath just proves what an old, sick dude I am...lol.

cheers cheers cheers

Hey BBall, can you upload the PWCG to a dropbox or something for us? It looks like his site has been down for quite a while and isn't being maintained anymore...

Will do!

I just recently got them (probably 2 weeks ago). I'll provide the link where I picked them up, or I'll do the DB thing... I'll get on it ASAP.

From the man himself:

Posted Yesterday, 23:57

"Hi all.  The web site is no more.  GoDaddy jacked up the rates.  I will look for a less expensive alternative but for now it's offline."

Me thinks he'll have it up soon. Until then, I'm exploring how to get it to the DB thing. I can't for the life of me remember how it came in a download, and since now the "new" version of it and ROF have a utility that allows the game to switch back and forth to the PWCG GUI seamlessly, I'm afraid I'll give you bad info, or worse, not the complete download...

The best bet may be to wait for his site to come back up. (if it doesn't soon, I'll PM him and we'll explore other means)

Sorry mates.

Cool video! I have RoF and a lot of planes for it. My trouble is that it's very difficult for me to play without some type of head tracking. While I have tried a lot of the free head tracking programs, I think eventually, I'd rather pick up an Oculus Rift. I also could see myself flying it more if it had a system that worked with my hatswitch like in IL-2, but I've never been able to configure it properly.

Um, well, Strut I happen to have the latest version of PWCG. I don't know how I could get it to you though.

Also, FYI BBall the PWCG GUI mod does not work with the latest version of RoF.

Andrei, you can sign up for a free Dropbox account and upload it there... You'll get 2GB of space if that's enough?

That or if you have a Google Account, you'll get 15GB of free space at drive.google.com

Glad you were able to find it Highway.

Too bad about the GUI mod there Andrei, that little addition is really sweet (and makes the back and forth seamless). Here's hoping they straighten that out soon...

Yeah, Boosh, I completely understand about the head tracking thing. I did the TrackIR when it first came out years ago, and didn't like it at all. I'm on my third version (TiR5) and love it. Can't fathom flying without it... Good luck!

Had a quick fly tonight and it's much better than I remember... Smooth, pretty and much more responsive to control inputs than it used to be. Lots of practice needed though!
