Gametrix KW-908 Jetseat

Post by (C/229) Highway on Fri 10 Jun 2016 - 23:04

So as some of you may or may not know, I recently purchased a bit of kit that I've been debating for a while. Quite a few people I know have the Buttkicker that takes low frequency audio out of whatever you're listening to and turns it into vibrations that you feel with a standard office chair mount. I looked at these a few times, but they retail for around AUD$350 and they're a little too expensive in my opinion.

A while ago Aussie showed me a little project on the DCS forums called SimShaker by a guy called Andre who was making a piece of software that interfaced with DCS to put out specific effects within the game to LFA (vibration) devices, and one of the things he was recommending was the KW-908 Jetseat.

Initially I was a little skeptical. There's a guy in Russia making a piece of software, re-selling these fabric cushions that are supposed to be better than a product that has been in market for almost 20 years... Yeah right...

Eventually I got over my skepticism and said screw it, it's worth a shot, and it so was!

The Jetseat is indeed a PVC and fabric cushion that contains 8 small vibration motors that is designed to strap onto your existing chair. It has a 3.5mm audio input and passthrough so that you can lead your audio cable from your computer to the seat and then from the seat to your speakers to run it as a traditional LFA device. It also has a control module with a USB cable on the end, and this is where the magic happens.

There is a small software package that you can get from Andre's website that detects the cushion and interfaces with several flight sims like DCS, Falcon BMS and FSX (as a force feedback device) as well as with racing sims like iRacing, Assetto Corsa and more recently Real Racing Room Experience and Project CARS with Dirt Rally on the way.

When you launch a game, it autodetects which game is running and the fun begins. With DCS, that means that you 'feel' the rotors of your Huey beating, you feel the skids scraping along the ground, you feel weapons firing, damage being taken and even impending VRS and I absolutely love it. It brings another dimension to DCS that makes flying rotary wing aircraft a little more intuitive and compensates for a lot of the 'gut feeling' that a simulator can't usually give you.

It doesn't stop there though, there are effects for all aircraft in DCS! With Racing simulations you can feel the engine beat, gear changes, bumps and buffets and loss of traction.

I've had the seat now for 3 weeks and I can say with absolute confidence that you will love it too. Every aspect of the feedback is tweakable to suit your personal taste. Think the thud of the cabin doors of the Huey is too strong? Turn them down, not feeling enough vibration as you approach VRS? Turn it up!

It's brought a completely new dimension to flying in DCS and I had the biggest shit eating grin grin on my face the first time I took off in the Mirage feeling the bumps in the tarmac under my butt as I rolled down the runway, the kick of the afterburner cutting in my back and then the thud, thud, thud in my left kidney, right kidney and then under my knees as the undercarriage came up  Very Happy

If you hadn't guessed it from the description above, all 8 motors work independently of each other so you will feel effects in different parts of your body depending on what's going on when using the USB mode and Andre's tailored software. The only exception to this is when you're using it in the standard sound mode as a traditional LFA device for titles that aren't yet supported, but Andre is a passionate guy, if there's a game you want supported and it can export telemetry data that he can access, he'll get on it.

It costs US$185 plus shipping and this is the only downside... Coming from Vladivostok, shipping via Russian post can take a while. I was lucky and got my seat within 2 weeks of ordering, Aussie by contrast is still waiting for his to arrive and a lot of people on the ED forums seems to also be on one side or the other. That said, Andre's communication was fantastic and he was responsive to every email that I sent usually replying within an hour or two.

You can order here and read more about it on the ED forums here.

If anybody has any questions about it at all, just let me know but much like having flown with a Track IR, once you've had it you truly miss it!

You guys realize that with the amount of money we put into this hobby that we could actually pay for flight lessons...how stupid are we??
On a similar note, anyone know what happened to Nvidia Shadowplay? I dont see it in geforce experience anymore.

Noted Smile however, I equated my spending on our hobby to the amount my colleagues at work spend on cigarettes, and my hobby isn't killing me!

For me to get flight lessons its about $300 to $400 an hour for rotary, i believe you can get PPL in Australia legally in 40 hours minimum, but average "Joe" takes 60 to 70 hours - do the math !!

Doesnt have to be rotary, and for here its about $25k to learn how to fly in a cheap Robinson R22. Its only $6400 to get my private pilots license...even less since Im an A&P and I can work on their aircraft in lieu of tach time. I havent gone that route, but you figure in the 800 dollar monitor, 700 dollar Obutto, 400 dollar rudder pedals, 500 dollar joystick, and the 2500 invested into the electronic money pit.....and all of the other stuff that were made unairworthy due to "nerd rage", I could be renting Skyhawks right now..
