Have Oculus Rift? Post suggestions please...

Post by (A/229) Utley on Thu 16 Jun 2016 - 12:17

I just received mine today and plugged them in to start flying. The mfg specs say the resolution is roughly 2550x1200, but I think it looks really grainy, and I compare it to looking at a 60" big screen 1080p HDTV really close. If you have any experience setting up the OR, please post your recommendations! My first pro tip would be to pack some Dramamine before you fly.

Also, for shits and giggles I tried just now to adjust the resolution of the goggles. I mentioned on teamspeak earlier that the resolution is kinda low and could barely read the gauges. Im nearsighted, and I need glasses to drive. Last moment testing for the night before I hit the rack, I loaded up DCS with my glasses on and.........I can read the gauges as clear as day. Not even a hint of blurriness. Its actually better in resolution than my current 2160p monitor!

Sweet! I'm sure I head Wags mention something about pixel density in the video at the weekend improving things.

How's the comfort level with glasses on? Have you tried it with contacts on? I'm debating on getting one or waiting on a version 2 of the oculus.

I wear both contacts and glasses. Contacts are better for this than glasses comfort level wise, but glasses are doable. I wouldnt recommend them unless you have some really good low profile glasses that are durable. Even better if you are far sighted...this seems contradictory, but the Fresnel lens was designed with maximizing depth perception in a small unit and they act like an pair of binoculars.

Wonder how this would affect my astigmatism. Been thinking about saving up for Oculus Rift. Hopefully the price will come down as this tech gets more widespread.

Thinking right now its not worth it...its nice as hell, and does it really feel you are in the cockpit. But after about a half hour you're already getting pretty seasick. This tech needs a little bit more work before it becomes feasible, but right now Im going to get rid of it. Glad I kept my TrackIr...

Pros - Gunnery accuracy is amazing in the Huey from all 4 sides. I managed to take out a couple of T-55s in the target practice mission with the door gunners alone, and thats not a simple task. CAS is perfect for the OR. The copilot/turret gunner aims automatically at the focal point. The door gunners you can steer the gun around like never before with 90% accuracy. Landing is amazingly easier than it used to be, as you can see how big the landing pad is relative to your aircraft. Peripheral vision is very nice, and very nice to finally have.

Cons - The DCS engine has a long way to go with 3d immersion. Shaders are rendered offset from one eye to the other, and this is what is really making me nauseated. Reflections on water near the coastline, objects over the water, reflections of terrain in the water...all rendered in one eye and not the other. Grass has a nasty shimmer to them, making me think its giving me some sort of epileptic fit. Terrain detail goes out only a few miles and is rendered too blurry to identify targets . You can't zoom in or out with noc's; what you see is what you get. I also see a lot of stuttering (and we all know DCS is bad about that....), and the refresh rate isnt even close to being in sync with FPS. Ghosting is the biggest thing I see so far too. All of this combined is what makes this game very disorienting. HUD pippers arent exactly fun to look at either: you look through the hud to see the target, the pipper will not be focused. You look at the pipper, the HUD will not be focused. You look at the HUD glass, you will see two pippers in each eye and you will be cross eyed for most of your gunnery. Unless you are immune to motion sickness, save your money for a while longer.

All you guys interested in getting the rift, stand fast and just let the software catch up. Wait until they come up with a solution for the nausea. Some later versions coming for Oculus Rift will most likely have different lenses that reduce the field of view, which has been tested and reported as the most likely cause of motion sickness.
