"A Day In The Life...

Post by (A/229) BBall on Tue 3 Sep 2013 - 11:30

...Of An Air Cav Slick Pilot"

That's the title I gave to my latest vid. It's from the mission we flew several nights ago ("A Bad Day For Charlie").

You Tube can be a bit funky on these things. The last vid I put up ("Lam Son 719") had the music muted out of it for a few days. I had an exchange with them, convinced them that I had indeed purchased the music, and had no ambitions to profit from it. They then relented and "un" muted the sound track. Who knows how this will go, but hopefully they'll show the same good sense they did on the my last video.

My only suggestions are to:

-select the "HD" option,
and
-crank up the sound!

Have a great day all!

Great vid BBall, fun to watch.

Don't you guys in Alpha company pick up your own downed guys? Shoddy, I say! Mad

Oh and the crew chiefs in Bravo company told me to tell you to stop borrowing our birds and use your own company's Hueys. Razz

And the Academy Award goes to... Seriously, I was on the edge of my seat for that one. Especially after I plugged it into the 46" TV. Awesome job once again. Thanks.

Oh man BBall...that was very cool...gives me goose bumps remembering my days as PIC/flight leader with so many lives in my hands...some friends that I'll never see again and some that are my life long friends. What you have captured is what is looked like in real life...good job.

Thanks to everyone... not sure I deserve all of that...but a huge "thank you" nonetheless.

The flying told the story, I was just the pen it used to do the deed (or mouse click...lol). I guess I'm a TRUE flight sim weenie, for it seems that in about 99% of the aviation/history books I read, during said read, part of my brain is in some dark recess thinking in the "mission builder du jour" about how I can make that (real life) story into a mission for my LAN group (and now you guys) to fly online.

I once did a mini-campaign in the P-38 in IL-2 featuring the "55th FS" (Double Nickel) as it flew across the ETO in WWII. Then I started building another one in the same machine attempting to do the "Satan's Angels" 375th FG story in the PTO...

...I know. I'm an addict for trying to tell the stories of those gone before us in the hostile skies of aerial conflict. And I've found this medium to be (mostly) wonderfully suited for it....well, I'd dearly love a Vietnam (or at least a jungle) map to work with.

There are LOTS of limitations for those of us with a historical eye for accuracy, and sometimes it's almost painful to not be too accurate in that regard, but we do the best we can. Case in point, as I was debuting this last vid to my lovely bride (she really liked it btw), and she asked..."now where is this supposed to be taking place?" I sadly said..."uh...Vietnam." Now, she's been to Saigon with me on a three day layover a few years ago, and she gave me a sidelong glance (we've obviously both seen Vietnam from the air, and a more gorgeous country you'll probably never see), but in the end, the story-line overcame the map, and that's about the best a "storyteller" can hope for.

Thanks again guys for the kind words. I'd love to post up a piece I did about my Dad's flying in Vietnam (I did it from his perspective, and it's one of my favorite pieces), just not sure where to put it.

OH....and by the way. Procedural question here. In the video story (and mission) we had a new "lead" show up after the first lift that I flew. I started out as #4 out of 5 in the flight, but when "Showtime" showed up and took the reins from "SIX", did he essentially "push us all back one" in the numbering system of the chalk? Did I indeed go from #4 to #5? I was hoping I got it right.... Flyer? Showtime? SIX?

Have a great day all,

BBall
