A question for you Infantrymen

Post by (D/229)Phantom_499 on Wed 9 Apr 2014 - 13:15

I was browsing some youtube footage of US Soldiers in action in Afghanistan and came across this clip. At the 2:30 mark a gentleman pops up with an interesting hand held device. Is this a handheld grenade launcher? Could someone identify it for me?

Very interesting sir. I did not realize that there were difficulties with the M203 grenade launching system. This thing indeed looks like a very effective weapon. So out of curiosity, how many guys in a platoon would carry these?

Im not sure in a US standard Inf Squad, but in an Australian Inf Section most probably 2 or even 3 so to answer your question possibly a minimum of 6 in an Inf platoon, with more on hand depending on task. The 40mm rounds come in HE (High Explosive),  Illumination rounds i think its got about a 25 second illum light up about 100m x 100m area, A Shotgun round is also available, there is a prac round, gas round ( although last time i saw only fit the M79) and possibly some type of penetrating round for light skin vehicles that was being talked about a ways back.

As for the M203, i would say (although i might be wrong) it was designed originally to fit the M16 Rifle before modular systems came in , for example the M4, most weps now consist of Picatinny rails and adaptations that allow you to snap on most types of modules, from PEC 2 / 3 lasers  , different sights, and lights - Surefire Torches etc etc. So the good ol M203 and M79 have become old and redundant.

The 203 could not load all the same rounds as the m320 there are dozens of different types. Some of the m203's were converted to the rail system some years ago. Just like Strut said 2 per squad, 6 per platoon. The M320 gives you the option of not always carrying that thing on your rifle, it has its own stock, so you can keep it in the truck or in your pack and fire it with out your rifle. FN made a much better version in my opinion. The M320 could not go from stock mod to rifle mode as easily as it should, and it was big and clunky.
